Defense Shines - Haslett = DC Genius
September 11th, 2006
When the Broncos trotted into the Ed they had no idea what they were in for. Instead they came in prancing like a herd of studs over confident that they could just stampede over the Rams D at will.
But the Rams had something to say about that attitude and it didn't take long for them to let the Broncos know that their disrespect was not going to be tolerated. Not on this opening day, not in OUR house.
From the moment the Rams defense marched onto the field they were in control and they never let go. They were bound and determined that they were going to show everyone that they were not the same sorry ass defense from years past.
Jim Haslett, albiet, it's just the first game but if this is any indication of what he has to offer for the rest of the season, well, he just might be considered a genius. At least in this game he came off looking like one. He had Shanahan so well game planned that at times it looked as if he knew what old Shanny was doing before he knew what he was doing. Just superb defensive game planning against a team that everyone said we couldn't beat.
It's obvious that the defense has completely bought into Jim Haslett and his defensive scheme. They simply manhandled the Broncos and Leonard Little won't be forgotten any time soon by Jake Plummer. I'm sure he'll be seeing him in his dreams the rest of this week and being thankful that he doesn't have to face him again this year. And if there's anyone out there that doesn't believe now that Glover, Witherspoon, Brown and Chavous were not incredible pick ups in the offseason has got to be living on a different planet.
Although the offense was ineffective, I'm not going to lay into them all that much at this point in time. Since it is a new offensive scheme, I will give them a benefit of a doubt at this time. But Bulger really needs to do something during this upcoming week to try and get on the same page as the rest of his offense or he's soon going to hearing a lot of people starting to ask for his head.
Before I end here, I've got to mention the special teams. Hey folks, I think we've finally got that problem fixed! This is the first time that I've seen in eons where they have not been an embarassment. Another bright spot indeed. Denver never once got any better field position than the 21 yard line and Reed looks as if he's got a good chance of really giving us some exciting returns as the season progresses.
Dare I say it? Is it possible that the Rams may become feared for their Defense and maybe even their Special Teams and not their offense? Do I care? As long as we win baby, I don't care who the heros are, just as long as we win.
